Cooking shows

"Julie and Julia" sounds like a wonderful movie. I remember when she, Julia Child, used to be on PBS a long time ago. I didn't really understand at that time that cooking could be a joyous thing. However, she sowed the seeds somewhere in the back of my mind that maybe someday I could cook something great. Many years later it was Nathalie Dupree who finally helped me conquer the fear of cooking. Her attitude was don't cry over lumpy gravy, just strain it for Heaven's sake. Another thing she said on that Great Chef's show so long ago was men have their hobbies and spend lots of money on gadgets for their hobby and for us not to feel guilty over a pie that failed. How much did the ingredients cost? How much does an egg cost or that cup of flour. She gave me the courage to not be intimidated when a meal didn't come out as well as it possibly could have. If it was a total disaster, then we had eggs for dinner...provided there were any left. I think you get the idea how liberating hearing something like that can be. I've never bought a Julia Child cookbook, but I did buy Nathalie Dupree's. I wish I could go to Mexico for her cooking class this month.

The movie about a young girl going through Julia Child's cookbook and cooking all the recipes and blogging about the experience sounds delightfully funny and a great way to spend a couple of hours in a theatre. It starts showing here this weekend and I can hardly wait to see it, if my personal plague goes away. I may even get up the nerve to buy a Julia Child cookbook to see what I've been missing all these years.

  1. Yes, this is one I want to see also.
I love to cook, and unfortunately I love to eat what I cook!

  2. LOL! Well... I do believe I'd rather buy the book and try the recipes and perhaps even blog about it myself (than go to see a movie about it!)! But that's just me and movies! ;) How IS your plague coming along? I hope your feeling MUCH better!

  3. I can hardly wait to see Meryl Streep as Julia Child! Julia was bigger than life and Meryl Streep captures her so well. I think it is going to be great.

The plague continues, but not with such vengence. My ear is stopped up and my nose is, too. I only have one more antibiotic.

When I went to the dentist today to get the crown on one of my tooth smoothed and back in line I didn't cough. I so hope I didn't give it to our dentist. He is such a nice guy. I had bitten a piece of hard candy and cracked the crown leaving a sharp point and a rough side to my tooth. I guess I just swallowed what came off or spit it out not realizing what I'd done.

  5. I'm glad you stopped by to say hello. Hope you feel better soon. I had to laugh when you shared your memories of learning to cook. I've got a funny (disgusting?) story I might share someday about a beef roast gone terribly wrong. I used it to break the ice with my daughter-in-law the first time she invited us over for dinner, but I think I may have given the wrong impression. She gave me a strange look at the time. I've since learned to tell that story only when someone comes over to our house for dinner.

  6. walk2write,

Please share your story with us whenever you feel comfortable. I have some real cooking humdingers that I've done in the past, present and probably in the future. I can't wait to know that I'm not alone in cooking hell from time to time.

  7. Hi Amber, You will have to let us all know how the movie was and if you liked it. I think it sounds like a good one, too. I learned to cook a lot of stuff from my mother-in-law. She was a great Southern cook. My mother was one of those people that did not like anyone in her kitchen but her! We have Clint Eastwood's movie Grand Torino coming from Netflix this week. I have been wanting to see it for a while. I hope you are feeling much better by now. Sounds like you are missing your grandson. I hope he makes it home for his birthday.
