Pneumonic Plague

This morning I was feeling a little better until I read the headline on Yahoo that pneumonic plague has returned in China. While coughing violently I read the article all the while thinking that surely this is the beginning of the end of days. The guy who died yesterday was a neighbor to the guy that died a couple of days ago. I cannot even imagine having to be an emergency care giver in a situation like that. Oh...I just was re-reading the article and there have been 10 other people who died. They were relatives of the first guy...or the index case. (I've read a number of books about Ebola and other deadly diseases). The virus that causes Ebola, well a HUGE number of the virus could fit into this period. <-- period. The world has become a scarier place than it used to be, I believe. Well, back to being a health care professional in China at this time (or any other time) would be a hair raising event. I'd not last long, but then..they are all quarantined so I couldn't get out to share the plague with you. I wonder how many will get past authorities and run to Beijing, but they might not live long enough to make it far. WHO says humans would only live 24 hours after exposure. They got pneumonic plague from killing and eating marmots. Marmots are sort of a squirrel/prairie dog looking thing, but after you are infected it is spread by coughing or sneezing. The droplets fan out and gets everywhere and wait for you to come along and touch that surface.

Anyway, I just bring this up as I sit here coughing from the mysterious cold, and being thankful as all get out that it isn't worse, and that I don't live in China (for many different reasons). I wonder if my doctor would be happy to call in some prescriptions instead of me coming by his office today. Just wondering...but not hopeful.

Oh yeah...summer has returned with a vengence! It was nice and cool all weekend and last week, I think...been sick..remember. Today it is supposed to get up to 103F. Ugh.

  1. Stay inside with the air, drink lots of juice and tea and watch silly movies or the soaps and rest!
    Feel better soon.

  2. Hi Amber, I hope you are feeling better by now. I am almost scared to go to the grocery anymore and I hate going to the doctor's office for anything. Mine won't prescribe anything over the phone. Not even if you think you are dying and can't get into the office. I heard a woman doctor talking on T.V. the other day and she said if one of her nurses got sick at all, she made them go home before they gave it to everyone in the office! DUH! I could not believe she said that when she probably has a whole waiting room full of sick people. My doctor always asks me what is wrong with me. Usually, that is the reason I go, to find out what is wrong with me! It is all so frustrating.

  5. I took Maribeth's advice and got caught up on old movies, drank lots of orange juice and slept some. My doc did send some antibiotics out and some over the counter mucus junk. Hopefully things will be looking up in the morning. I've been going to this doc for over 30 years and he knows I'm not kidding and a few years ago he nearly died from the flu.

  7. Thank you, PJ and all of you guys who have had ideas about how to deal with this cold/allergy/deadly plague. I still feel like heck and not in a good way at all. Not much fever so I guess swine flu is out. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
